INTRODUCTION

As a child, you dream about what life has in store for you. And as you matured, some of those dreams may have come to fruition. Other dreams may have initially developed, but have faded away with the realities of life. And some dreams may still seem so far away that they may never come true at all. What do you do when dreams can't come true? When you realize that you've lost control?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What are some of your dreams or life goals that have come to fruition? What are some of the broken dreams that you have that have never developed or have faded away?

  2. What do you do when you know your dreams cannot come true? When the destination is unreachable? Moreover, how is that working for you?

  3. Read 1 Samuel 21:1-9. While there was once a time when David found favor with the royal court, he now has to flee the kingdom to save his life. How does David deal with this reversal of fortune?

  4. Although David has been known to trust God for many things in his life, in this story David begins to take matters into his own hands. What does it mean to "take matters into our own hands"? How does that reflect our trust in God?

  5. When life spirals out of our control, how can we keep from panicking and forgetting that God is in control?

THINK ABOUT IT

Broken dreams are not proof that your life is spinning out of control. They are a reminder that you've never really been in control. When your dreams can't come true, that's not the time to try and take control. Instead, it is the time to lean hard into the only one who has ever really been in control.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

God often reminds us in interesting ways of how he has been present in our lives. Take a moment to pause and look around your world for icons of God's past faithfulness to you.

CHANGING YOUR MIND

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
